Hi, I don't understand this figure. It says it controls a relay which I thought was the thing on the left hand side, but then in the text it says that is a power supply for the relay, but there is no relay? Also, the wires at (3) seem odd, there is a short wire but that just seems to loop back to the longer wire above and to the right. So is that redundant? Very confused.
Thanks,
Peter.

For other people's benefit I think this is where the relay is connected from the description in the text about stray current looping around the coils through the diode. But I'm not sure why that current wants to go around the diode rather than into the transistor.
EDIT... is that because the relay coil changes from on to off only after the transistor is turned off, so that the current can no longer flow through the transistor? If the diode wasn't there where would that current go if it can't go through the transistor / what is the diode protecting?

Peter.
